Where to go in Helsinki: events, concerts and shows worth your night

Helsinki punches far above its size: one of Europe’s oldest rock clubs, a concert hall built for two orchestras, a museum quarter around a single square, and a summer when the sun barely sets and every park has a stage. Concerts and live music in Helsinki: Tavastia and the Musiikkitalo

Tavastia (Urho Kekkosen katu 4–6, 00100, Kamppi, tavastiaklubi.fi) has been the home of Finnish rock since 1970: a 700-capacity room in a 1931 student-nation house, with gigs on over 250 nights a year and the smaller Semifinal club beside it. The Musiikkitalo (Mannerheimintie 13, 00100, musiikkitalo.fi), the glass concert hall between the parliament and Kiasma, is home to the Helsinki Philharmonic and the Finnish Radio Symphony; the Kulttuuritalo (Sturenkatu 4, 00510), Alvar Aalto’s brick hall in Kallio, takes touring rock and jazz. Arena tours play the Helsinki Halli in Pasila.

Helsinki nightlife: Kallio and the harbour

Kallio, north of the centre across the Pitkäsilta bridge, is where Helsinki goes out: a working-class district turned bar district, with karaoke, live music and late bars along Helsinginkatu and Vaasankatu. The clubs are in the centre around Kamppi and the railway station, and in summer on the harbour terraces and the Suomenlinna ferries. Bars close at 2 am, clubs at 4; the trams stop around 1.30 am and night buses take over.

Opera, ballet and theatre in Helsinki

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet (Helsinginkatu 58, 00250, by Töölönlahti bay, oopperabaletti.fi) runs from August to June in its 1993 house, with surtitles in English at every performance and student and last-minute prices. The Finnish National Theatre on the railway square and the Helsinki City Theatre in Kallio are in Finnish; the Swedish Theatre at the end of the Esplanade in Swedish. Dance lives at the Dance House Helsinki in the Cable Factory in Ruoholahti.

Art galleries and museums in Helsinki for an evening

Kiasma (Mannerheiminaukio 2, 00100, kiasma.fi), Steven Holl’s curved contemporary museum next to the Musiikkitalo, is open late on Wednesdays and Fridays, and Amos Rex (Mannerheimintie 22–24, 00100, amosrex.fi) sits under the Lasipalatsi square across the road, its domed skylights doubling as the square’s hills. The Ateneum on the railway square holds the classic Finnish collection, HAM in the Tennispalatsi the city’s own; most museums are free on the first Friday of the month or on Museum Card days.
