Ballet and dance around the world: where to go, city by city

Dance needs no translation, which makes it the best evening for a visitor in a city whose language you don’t speak. The cities on Togoist hold most of the world’s great ballet companies and a strong contemporary circuit. Here is where to go, with addresses, and a link to the ballet and dance on in each city right now.

Ballet in London, Paris and New York

Ballet in London means the Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House (Bow Street, Covent Garden) and contemporary dance at Sadler’s Wells (Rosebery Avenue), the busiest dance house in Europe. Ballet in Paris is the Paris Opera Ballet at the Palais Garnier (place de l’Opéra), under the Chagall ceiling, and the larger productions at the Opéra Bastille; the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Théâtre de la Ville take the visiting companies. Ballet in New York has New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center (10 Lincoln Center Plaza), and the Joyce Theater in Chelsea for contemporary work.

Ballet in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Vienna

Ballet in Copenhagen is the Royal Danish Ballet, founded in 1748 and keeper of the Bournonville style, dancing mostly at the Old Stage on Kongens Nytorv from late August to June, with a family Nutcracker every December. Ballet in Stockholm is the Royal Swedish Ballet at the Kungliga Operan (Gustav Adolfs torg 2), and ballet in Vienna the Wiener Staatsballett, dancing at both the Staatsoper (Opernring 2) and the Volksoper, with cheap standing tickets on the day.

Ballet in Berlin, Amsterdam and Dublin

Ballet in Berlin is the Staatsballett, which dances across all three opera houses, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Deutsche Oper and the Komische Oper. Ballet in Amsterdam is Dutch National Ballet at the Nationale Opera & Ballet on the Amstel, one of Europe’s strongest classical companies. Dance in Dublin centres on the Dublin Dance Festival in May and the Abbey and Bord Gáis Energy Theatre for visiting companies.

Ballet in Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Milan and Rome

Ballet in Madrid is the Compañía Nacional de Danza at the Teatro Real (Plaza de Isabel II) and the Teatros del Canal, with flamenco at the Corral de la Morería (Calle de la Morería 17). Dance in Barcelona lives at the Mercat de les Flors in Poble-sec and the Gran Teatre del Liceu on the Rambla. Ballet in Lisbon is the Companhia Nacional de Bailado at the Teatro Camões in Parque das Nações; ballet in Milan the La Scala Ballet (Via Filodrammatici 2); ballet in Rome the Teatro dell’Opera company, outdoors at the Terme di Caracalla in July.
