Museums and exhibitions around the world: where to go, city by city

The best museums for an evening are the ones that stay open late, sell a drink and put on the exhibitions the whole city is talking about. Every city on Togoist has at least one. Here is where to go, with addresses, and a link to the exhibitions and museum events on in each city right now.

Museums in London, Dublin and Edinburgh

Exhibitions in London start at Tate Modern (Bankside, SE1), free to enter and open until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Hayward Gallery at the Southbank Centre; most of the national museums are free and open late one night a week. Exhibitions in Dublin are at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, free, with summer concerts on the lawns, and the Hugh Lane on Parnell Square. Exhibitions in Edinburgh centre on the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Fruitmarket.

Museums in Paris, Berlin and Vienna

Exhibitions in Paris are at Palais de Tokyo (13 avenue du Président-Wilson), Europe’s largest contemporary art space, open until midnight, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in the Bois de Boulogne while the Centre Pompidou is closed for renovation until 2030. Exhibitions in Berlin are at Hamburger Bahnhof (Invalidenstraße 50–51), the national contemporary museum in a former station, the Neue Nationalgalerie and the five museums of Museum Island, open late on Thursdays. Exhibitions in Vienna fill the MuseumsQuartier (Museumsplatz 1), with the Leopold Museum’s Schiele collection and mumok, and the Belvedere with Klimt’s The Kiss.

Museums in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Amsterdam

Exhibitions in Copenhagen mean Kunsthal Charlottenborg on Nyhavn, free on Wednesday evenings, Cisternerne’s single underground installation each year in Frederiksberg, and Louisiana up the coast in Humlebæk, open until 10 pm from Tuesday to Friday. Exhibitions in Stockholm start at Fotografiska (Stadsgårdshamnen 22), open until 11 pm every night, and the Moderna Museet on Skeppsholmen. Exhibitions in Amsterdam are at the Stedelijk (Museumplein 10), beside the Van Gogh Museum, with Museumnacht in November opening fifty museums until 2 am.

Museums in Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Milan and Rome

Exhibitions in Madrid centre on the Reina Sofía (Calle de Santa Isabel 52), home of Guernica, open until 9 pm and free for the last two hours, and Matadero Madrid by the river. Exhibitions in Barcelona are at MACBA (Plaça dels Àngels 1) in the Raval and the Fundació Joan Miró on Montjuïc. Exhibitions in Lisbon are at MAAT on the Belém riverfront and the Gulbenkian; exhibitions in Milan at Pirelli HangarBicocca (Via Chiese 2), free, with Kiefer’s seven towers, and the Triennale; exhibitions in Rome at MAXXI (Via Guido Reni 4A), Zaha Hadid’s museum in Flaminio, and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni on Via Nazionale.

Museums in New York and the American cities

Exhibitions in New York run from MoMA (11 West 53rd Street) and the Whitney, both open late on Fridays, to the Chelsea galleries with their Thursday openings. Los Angeles, Boston and Las Vegas each have their own listings.
