Clubs and club nights around the world: where to go, city by city

Club culture is local: each city has its own hours, its own door policy and its own idea of a good night. Here is where to go city by city, with addresses and what to expect, and a link to the club nights and DJ sets on in each city right now.

Clubs in London, Dublin and Edinburgh

Club nights in London are measured against fabric (77A Charterhouse Street, Farringdon), three rooms in a former cold store opposite Smithfield Market, house and techno on Fridays and Saturdays until morning; Dalston, Hackney, Peckham and Brixton hold the smaller rooms, and the Night Tube runs all night on the main lines at weekends. Club nights in Dublin cluster around Camden Street and Wexford Street, with late bars until 2.30 am; Edinburgh has the Cowgate clubs and a licensing regime that runs later than the rest of the UK.

Clubs in Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris

Club nights in Berlin begin with Berghain (Am Wriezener Bahnhof, Friedrichshain), open from Saturday night until Monday morning behind a famously selective door, and Tresor (Köpenicker Straße 70) in the vaults of a former heating plant; the U-Bahn runs all night at weekends. Club nights in Amsterdam have moved across the IJ to Shelter (Overhoeksplein 3), two minutes by free ferry from Centraal, and out to the 24-hour venues in Noord and Oost; Amsterdam Dance Event in October fills every room in the city. Club nights in Paris start at Rex Club (5 boulevard Poissonnière), the techno institution under the Grand Rex cinema, and move to the warehouses of the northern suburbs; the Métro stops around 2 am at weekends.

Clubs in Copenhagen, Stockholm and Vienna

Club nights in Copenhagen are in Kødbyen, the Meatpacking District, where Jolene (Flæsketorvet 81–85) has run house, techno and dub since 2007, Thursday to Saturday. Club nights in Stockholm move outdoors in summer to Trädgården (Hammarby Slussväg 2), the open-air club under the Skanstull bridge, and back below it to Under Bron in winter; Stureplan holds the dress-code clubs. Club nights in Vienna start at Flex (Augartenbrücke 1) in a tunnel by the Danube canal and continue under the Gürtel arches.

Clubs in Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Milan and Rome

Club nights in Barcelona start after 1 am at Razzmatazz (Almogàvers 122), five rooms until 6 am, at Sala Apolo in Poble-sec and along the Port Olímpic seafront; the Metro runs all night on Saturdays. Club nights in Madrid run latest of all, with the big electronic nights at Fabrik in Humanes and the bars of Malasaña until three. Club nights in Lisbon end at Lux Frágil (Avenida Infante D. Henrique, Armazém A), three floors in a dockside warehouse with a river terrace for sunrise, after Bairro Alto and the Pink Street in Cais do Sodré. Club nights in Milan follow the aperitivo hour along the Navigli and around Corso Como, with Alcatraz on Via Valtellina at weekends; Rome is a city of bars and piazzas more than clubs, with Testaccio and the Via Ostiense for the exceptions.

Clubs in New York and the American cities

Club nights in New York are in Brooklyn: Elsewhere (599 Johnson Avenue, Bushwick), a warehouse with a main hall, two rooms and a roof, is the anchor, and the L train runs all night. Los Angeles, Las Vegas, with its residency clubs on the Strip, and Boston each have their own listings.
