Warsaw was rebuilt from nothing and has been making up for lost time since: one of the largest opera houses in Europe, a rock club that dates from the sixties, a riverside of open-air bars in summer, and a gallery scene spread through the old industrial districts. Concerts and live music in Warsaw: Stodoła, the Philharmonic and the arena
Klub Stodoła (ul. Stefana Batorego 10, Mokotów) has been the city’s main rock club since 1956, with touring bands most nights; Progresja, in the west, takes the larger indie and metal shows, and the arena tours play the PGE Narodowy stadium and the COS Torwar hall. The Warsaw Philharmonic (ul. Jasna 5) hosts the Chopin competition every five years and a full symphony season. Jazz lives in the small clubs of the centre, Jassmine and 12on14 among them.
Warsaw nightlife: Pawilony, Plac Zbawiciela and the river
The Pawilony, a maze of tiny bars behind Nowy Świat, are where nights begin; Plac Zbawiciela and the streets around it hold the cocktail bars, and the Vistula boulevards become an open-air club district from May to September. The clubs are around the centre and in the former factories of Praga across the river. The Metro runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays.
Opera, ballet and theatre in Warsaw
The Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera (plac Teatralny 1, teatrwielki.pl) has one of the largest stages in the world and houses the Polish National Ballet, with surtitles in English; the season runs from September to June. The National Theatre shares the building. Most drama is in Polish; the opera, ballet and the many concerts are the easier evenings for visitors.
Museums and galleries in Warsaw for an evening
The Zachęta National Gallery (pl. Małachowskiego 3) is the contemporary exhibition hall in the centre, free on Thursdays; the Museum of Modern Art (ul. Marszałkowska 103) opened its white Thomas Phifer building on Plac Defilad, beside the Palace of Culture, in 2024. The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Warsaw Rising Museum are the two great narrative museums; Soho Factory in Praga and the galleries of Wola hold the smaller shows.
