Where to go in Stockholm: events, concerts and shows worth your night

Stockholm’s night is spread across fourteen islands: an opera house by the water, a concert hall where the Nobel Prizes are handed out, a rock club on the Södermalm quay and an open-air summer club under a motorway bridge that only Stockholm could have made a landmark. Concerts and live music in Stockholm: Debaser, Fasching and the Konserthuset

Debaser Strand (Hornstulls Strand 4, 117 39, debaser.se), on the Södermalm waterfront, is the city’s rock and indie club, 750 in the main room and a smaller stage in Bar Brooklyn, with gigs most nights of the week. Fasching (Kungsgatan 63, 111 22, fasching.se) has been the jazz club since 1977, with sets at nine and DJs after. The Konserthuset (Hötorget 8, 103 87, konserthuset.se), the blue 1926 hall on Hötorget, is home to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the Nobel ceremony; the Berwaldhallen on Djurgården has the Swedish Radio Symphony. The arena tours play the Avicii Arena and Tele2 Arena in Globen, south of the centre.

Stockholm nightlife: Södermalm, Stureplan and Trädgården

Södermalm is where the bars are, around Medborgarplatsen, Nytorget and Hornstull. Stureplan, in Östermalm, is the opposite: the expensive clubs, dress codes and queues. In summer the whole city moves outdoors to Trädgården (Hammarby Slussväg 2, 118 60, tradgarden.com), the open-air club under the Skanstull bridge, open from May to September with DJs, gigs, food and table tennis; its winter counterpart, Under Bron, runs in the space below. Most bars close at one, clubs at three. The Tunnelbana runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays.

Opera, ballet and theatre in Stockholm

The Kungliga Operan (Gustav Adolfs torg 2, 111 52, operan.se), the Royal Swedish Opera, stages opera and the Royal Swedish Ballet from August to June in its 1898 house opposite the palace, with cheap last-minute tickets on the day. Dramaten, the Royal Dramatic Theatre on Nybroplan, is Sweden’s national stage; most performances are in Swedish, though the Opera surtitles in English. Cirkus on Djurgården takes the musicals and touring shows.

Museums and galleries in Stockholm for an evening

Fotografiska (Stadsgårdshamnen 22, 116 45, fotografiska.com), the photography museum in a former customs house on the Södermalm quay, is open until 11 pm every night, with a top-floor restaurant looking across the water; it is the city’s evening museum. The Moderna Museet (Exercisplan 4, Skeppsholmen, 111 49, modernamuseet.se) holds the modern and contemporary collection on its own island, free for the permanent collection. Museums across the city stay open late on Museum Night in April.

Stockholm festivals and events by season

• Spring: Valborg bonfires on 30 April, and Stockholm Marathon and the start of the outdoor season in late May.
• Summer: Midsummer on the Friday nearest 21 June, when the city empties for the archipelago; the Stockholm Jazz Festival and Stockholm Pride in the summer; and open-air stages at Gröna Lund and Skansen.
• Autumn: Stockholm Culture Night in September, the Stockholm Film Festival in November, and the new opera and concert seasons.
• Winter: Christmas markets in Gamla Stan and Skansen from late November, the Nobel Prize ceremony at the Konserthuset on 10 December, and Lucia concerts in the churches on 13 December.
