Where to go in Montreux: events, concerts and shows worth your night

Montreux is a lakeside town that became a world music name because of one festival, and it keeps the calendar going all year: a lakeside concert hall, a Christmas market on the shore, a jazz café, and Chillon castle a walk along the water. Below is where to go in Montreux for an evening out, with addresses, and what tends to be on when.

Concerts and events in Montreux

The Montreux Jazz Festival (montreuxjazzfestival.com) fills the first two weeks of July with concerts in the Auditorium Stravinski and the Lake House at the 2m2c congress centre (Avenue Claude-Nobs 5) and free stages along the lake. The rest of the year the Stravinski hosts touring concerts and the Septembre Musical festival of classical music; Montreux Jazz Café keeps the archive playing nightly.

Montreux nightlife: the lakeside and Vevey

The lakeside promenade has the terraces, the casino and a few bars open until 2 am; Vevey, ten minutes by train, has the livelier bar scene, and Lausanne, twenty minutes away, the clubs. The last train back from Lausanne is around 1 am, later at weekends.

Museums and sights in Montreux

Chillon Castle, on its rock at the end of the lake, is open until 6 pm in summer and hosts concerts in its courtyard; the Queen Studio Experience in the casino, where the band recorded, is free; and the Chaplin’s World museum above Vevey and the Musée Jenisch in Vevey complete the set.

  • Winter: the Montreux Noël Christmas market along the lake from late November, and the ski resorts of the Vaud Alps an hour above the town.
  • Spring: the narcissus fields above the town in May, and the Montreux Comedy festival’s spring shows.
  • Summer: the Montreux Jazz Festival in early July, the Swiss National Day fireworks on 1 August, and open-air concerts at Chillon.
  • Autumn: Septembre Musical in September, the Montreux Comedy Festival in November, and the wine harvest festivals along the Lavaux terraces.
