Liverpool is the city that exported pop music to the world, and it still turns out a night: a 1,000-capacity venue on the Mersey, an arena and a new arena-sized conference hall on the waterfront, a philharmonic in an art deco hall, two football clubs, and a Ropewalks quarter that fills every weekend. Ropewalks, around Seel Street and Bold Street, has the bars and clubs; the Baltic Triangle the warehouses, breweries and the bigger club nights; Mathew Street the Beatles bars for visitors. Bars close at 2, clubs at 4 or later; the trains stop around midnight.
The Empire on Lime Street takes the touring musicals, the Everyman and the Playhouse produce new work, and the Royal Court on Roe Street does Liverpool comedy in Liverpool voices. Hot Water Comedy Club is one of the busiest stand-up rooms in the country.
Liverpool at Anfield and Everton at their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, the derby twice a season; Aintree’s Grand National in April, and cricket and tennis at the Liverpool International in summer. Club tickets go to members first; the cup ties and European nights are the ones that reach open sale.
Tate Liverpool at the Albert Dock, the Walker Art Gallery, the World Museum and the Museum of Liverpool are all free; the Bluecoat on School Lane is the contemporary arts centre, and FACT on Wood Street shows film and media art. The Liverpool Biennial fills the city in even years.
