Where to go in Lisbon: events, concerts and shows worth your night

Lisbon is a city of late dinners, warm nights and hills full of small stages: fado in the old quarters, one of Europe’s best-known clubs on the river, and a summer where every square seems to have a concert. Below is where to go in Lisbon for a night out, with addresses, and what tends to be on when.

Concerts and live music in Lisbon: the Coliseu, the Gulbenkian and the fado houses

The Coliseu dos Recreios (Rua das Portas de Santo Antão 96, 1150-269, near Rossio) is the city’s flagship hall, an 1890 iron-domed theatre that takes touring pop, rock and fado stars. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Avenida de Berna 45A, 1067-001, gulbenkian.pt) has the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir in its 1,200-seat auditorium with the gardens behind the stage; it also stages jazz and dance. Arena tours play the MEO Arena in Parque das Nações. For fado, the small houses of Alfama and Bairro Alto run sets nightly from about nine; the good ones are the ones that ask for silence.

Lisbon nightlife: Cais do Sodré, Bairro Alto and Lux Frágil

The night starts in Bairro Alto, where the bars spill into the streets until about two, and moves down the hill to Cais do Sodré, whose Rua Nova do Carvalho, the “Pink Street”, and the riverside clubs run until dawn. Lux Frágil (Avenida Infante D. Henrique, Armazém A, Cais da Pedra, Santa Apolónia, 1950-376, luxfragil.com) is the club that put Lisbon on the electronic map in 1998: three floors in a dockside warehouse, house and techno with a river terrace for sunrise. The Metro stops around 1 am; night buses and cheap taxis take over.

Opera, ballet and theatre in Lisbon

The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (Rua Serpa Pinto 9, 1200-442, Chiado) is the opera house, a 1793 neoclassical jewel with a season from autumn to summer. The Companhia Nacional de Bailado dances at the Teatro Camões in Parque das Nações, and the São Luiz Teatro Municipal in Chiado stages theatre, dance and music. Most theatre is in Portuguese; opera, dance and the many international music programmes are the easier evenings for visitors.

Art galleries and museums in Lisbon for an evening out

MAAT (Avenida Brasília, Central Tejo, 1300-598, Belém, maat.pt), the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, is the white-tiled wave on the riverfront and the former power station beside it, with contemporary shows and a rooftop you can walk over. The Gulbenkian’s modern art collection, reopened in a new building in 2024, and the Museu Coleção Berardo in the Centro Cultural de Belém hold the twentieth century. LX Factory (Rua Rodrigues de Faria 103, 1300-501) in Alcântara, a former textile works under the bridge, mixes galleries, a bookshop, bars and Sunday markets.

• Spring: the Lisbon Half Marathon across the 25 de Abril bridge in March, and the IndieLisboa film festival in May.
• Summer: the Santos Populares in June, above all the night of Santo António on 12 June, when Alfama, Graça and Bica fill with grilled sardines, music and dancing until morning; NOS Alive, the big rock and pop festival, in July; and Jazz em Agosto at the Gulbenkian.
• Autumn: the Lisbon Marathon in October, the new opera and concert seasons, and Doclisboa in October.
• Winter: Christmas lights and markets from late November, and the New Year concert at the Gulbenkian.
