From Schumann's 2nd Symphony to a Danish world premiere: Four generations of musical breakthroughs. What does it mean to be a pioneer?

This concert brings together four composers who each moved music in a new direction. Over almost 200 years, Robert Schumann, Elfrida Andrée, Grazyna Bacewicz and Niels Rønsholdt meet in a programme spanning from Romanticism's great symphonic tradition to a Danish world premiere.

Four generations of composers, each having left their mark on the development of music. At the conductor's podium stands Pawel Kapula, one of Europe's most exciting young conductors, who has just had his critically acclaimed debut at the BBC Proms and established himself as one of the new strong names on the international conducting scene.

The evening opens with Elfrida Andrée's brilliant concert overture, written by one of the Nordic region's most pioneering composers. This is followed by Niels Rønsholdt's Run Don't Walk, written for guitarist Jakob Bangsø and the Danish Entertainment Orchestra and performed for the first time at this concert.

Between past and present stands Grazyna Bacewicz's atmospheric Pensieri Notturni, where the dreamy and the modern meet. The concert's culmination is Robert Schumann's 2nd Symphony, one of Romanticism's great masterpieces.

Schumann belonged to the generation after Beethoven and faced the almost impossible task of writing symphonies in the shadow of the 9th Symphony. The result was a work filled with momentum, optimism and human strength.

Together, the concert's four composers show how new ideas arise, develop and leave their mark far beyond their own time.
