Carlos Santana is a Mexican and American guitarist, best known as the founding member of the rock band Santana. Rising to fame in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he pioneered a distinctive fusion of rock and roll with Latin American jazz, blending melodic, blues-based guitar lines against Latin American and African rhythms played on percussion instruments like timbales and congas that were uncommon in rock music. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s.
