Aarhus is Denmark’s second city and its student capital, with a music venue in a former power station, a rainbow on top of its art museum, the largest festival week in the Nordics and a Latin Quarter of bars a few minutes from the harbour. Concerts and live music in Aarhus: VoxHall, Train and the Musikhuset
VoxHall (Vester Allé 15, voxhall.dk), in the Godsbanen quarter, is the mid-sized room where touring bands play, with the smaller Atlas next door for jazz and world music; Train (Toldbodgade 6) by the harbour is the concert hall and club for the larger shows. The Musikhuset Aarhus (Thomas Jensens Allé 2) is home to the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and the Danish National Opera, and takes the musicals. Arena tours play the Ceres Arena and, in summer, the Tangkrogen park.
Aarhus nightlife: the Latin Quarter, Jægergårdsgade and the harbour
The Latin Quarter, the old streets north of the cathedral, has the cafés and bars; Jægergårdsgade, south of the station, the newer bars and restaurants; and the harbour front, Aarhus Ø, the summer terraces. The clubs are along Frederiksgade and around the Store Torv; most close at 5 am at weekends.
Museums and galleries in Aarhus for an evening
ARoS (Aros Allé 2, aros.dk), the art museum with Olafur Eliasson’s rainbow walkway on the roof, is open until 10 pm on Wednesdays; Kunsthal Aarhus in the Godsbanen quarter shows the contemporary programme, and Den Gamle By is the open-air museum of Danish town life. The Moesgaard Museum, south of the city, covers archaeology in a grass-roofed building.
