About The Nutcracker
The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act classical ballet by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, set on Christmas Eve in a child's imagination featuring a Nutcracker doll. The plot adapts Alexandre Dumas's short story, itself based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's earlier tale. Choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, the complete ballet initially proved less popular than the twenty-minute Nutcracker Suite that Tchaikovsky premiered nine months earlier, though it gained popularity over time and remains a beloved seasonal classic.
