About New York City Ballet
New York City Ballet is an American ballet company founded in 1948 by choreographer George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. Balanchine and Jerome Robbins are considered the founding choreographers, with Léon Barzin serving as the company's first music director. The company grew out of several earlier troupes, including the School of American Ballet's Producing Company, the American Ballet and Ballet Caravan, which eventually merged into the American Ballet Caravan before the company's establishment through the Ballet Society.
